This is SO important. I recently moved and was forced to check out nail salons in our new area. When I had waited for my pedicure I watched carefully noting who really cleaned their station between patrons and specifically requested the one that seemed more diligent.
As I set in the chair getting my pedicure I noticed a lady two chairs over with a nail fungus.(That really gross one that makes your nails really thick and horn-like) I watched as the lady doing the pedicure used the mechanical nail sander they usually use on acrylic nails, to sand down the woman's toe nails so they didn't look so thick and gross. She then dumped the whole contraption back in her box of instruments and finished the woman's pedicure.
In the meantime I was done and setting with my toes under the UV light. I watched as this woman slightly rinsed her station and began on another woman. This was terrifying. The owner had been watching me closely and must have seen the look on my face. She called the woman over and they had a heated conversation in whatever language they spoke, both turning to look at me several times. I got up to go talk to the woman waiting for them to start on her....and suddenly they rushed over and asked the woman to go to a different station.
It was awkward. The lady gave me my kit back, I paid and left. Later I checked my account and they never put the charge thru. I think they were pretty worried about what I had seen.
A dermatologist friend of mine explained that at an unclean pedicure station there are so many different diseases, fungi and other problems which can even be life threatening. So...don't just buy your own kit but be very observant. I am so glad they were busy when I had arrived so that I could watch them in action. I will not be going back to that salon.
1I am speaking about the millions who are being infected through contaminated cross shared piercing, tattooing (ink), manicure, pedicure, podiatry, in less extend acne extractions and hair electrolysis needles and instruments. Health authorities are not doing what they should do to stop or prevent this public health threat. People should only use personal, disposable or correctly autoclaved tools for these procedures. With 400 million people already infected with one of the hepatitis B,C,D,G etc. viruses and many ordinary diseases spreading fast, users of shared tools need efficient sanitary rules to prevent effectively these contaminations. Users need more protection!
